A candle is one of the oldest ways we have of saying that something matters. We light one for a person we miss, for someone going through a hard time, for a wish, a vow or a festival, or simply to sit beside while we meditate. This one is made of light rather than wax. Choose how long it should burn, from an hour to twenty-eight days, a whole cycle of the moon, and it carries on burning while we are away, so we find it just as far burnt down when we come back.

Privacy Notice
The candle lives in this browser. Anything we write in "We light this candle for" stays on this device and is never sent anywhere. To show how many candles are burning around the world, the site is told a random ID for the candle and when it will burn out, each time it is lit, put out or discarded; the same candle is never counted twice. To stop anyone inflating the numbers, the site also makes a scrambled code from the connection's IP address, using a key that changes every day, and limits each code to three new candles a day. The code cannot be turned back into the address, and it is thrown away at the end of the day. No names, emails, IP addresses or locations are kept. Clearing the browser's data, or choosing "Discard this candle", removes the candle. "Share a candle" uses the device's own sharing, and shares only what we choose to send.
