Generating Readings

To receive an I Ching reading, begin at the main menu and select Generate Reading. This starts the process of forming your question. Take a moment to focus on what you truly want insight into, as the I Ching responds best when your question is sincere, specific, and present focused.

Once you are ready, the app will ask you to choose the type of situation your question belongs to. This choice helps shape the interpretation:

  • Practical | everyday matters such as work, projects, decisions, home life, finances, or plans.
  • Psychological | inner states, personal growth, emotions, motivations, or patterns of thought.
  • Relational | interactions with others, communication, conflict, attraction, boundaries, or shared situations.

Select the category that best matches the heart of your question. The app will then generate your reading and present the hexagrams, guidance, and deeper layers of meaning.

If you are using the free version, you can generate up to three readings per day. The counter resets daily, allowing you to return for fresh insight whenever you need it.

The Coin Method

If you choose Manual Input, you can enter a reading using the traditional three coin method. This method was popularised in the nineteenth century by Western translators and became the most widely used way to consult the I Ching before digital tools existed.

This method assigns a numerical value to each coin toss. A coin showing tails counts as 2, and a coin showing heads counts as 3. Toss three coins together to form one line of the hexagram, then add the values of the three coins.

This total gives you one of the four possible line values:

  • 6 (old yin)
  • 7 (young yang)
  • 8 (young yin)
  • 9 (old yang)

Begin with the bottom line of the hexagram and work upward. Toss the coins six times, recording each result in order. This creates a six digit sequence such as 687996.

Enter this six digit string into the manual input box. The app will interpret the lines and construct the hexagram for you.

As with generated readings, take a moment to focus on your question. After entering your coin results, select whether your question is practical, psychological, or relational so the reading can be interpreted in the right tone.

The Dice Method

If you prefer a faster method, you can use the Dice Input option. This uses standard 8 sided dice, one roll for each line of the hexagram. It produces the same four line types as the coin method, including both young and old yin and yang, while avoiding the limitations of commercial I Ching dice that can only generate trigrams without changing lines.

To use this method, roll an 8 sided die once for each line, starting from the bottom line and working upward. Each roll gives a number from 1 to 8. After you have rolled six times, record the results in order to form a six digit sequence such as 178364.

Enter this sequence into the manual input box. The app will convert each die result into the correct I Ching line type and build the hexagram for you.

As with any reading, take a moment to focus on your question. After entering your dice results, choose whether your question is practical, psychological, or relational so the interpretation matches the tone of your situation.

The Journal (enhanced version)

The journal feature allows you to save your readings directly into the browser’s local storage. This means your entries stay on your device and are not sent anywhere else, so only you can see them. Enhanced users can save any reading to the journal for future reflection.

When you save a reading, you can record the question you asked and any notes or thoughts you want to remember. These details are stored alongside the reading and the date, making it easy to revisit your insights later.

To view your saved readings, choose Read from Journal in the main menu. Your entries are shown in date order, and you can load any reading to see it exactly as it was when you saved it.

This gives you a personal archive of your consultations, helping you track themes, decisions, and changes over time.

Sharing

The share button lets you send your reading to someone else. When you press Share, the app creates a link that contains your hexagram, the type of reading, and the seed that generated it. This allows another person to open the reading exactly as you saw it.

If your device supports sharing, you can send the link through your usual apps such as messaging, email, or social platforms. If sharing is not available, the app will show the link so you can copy and send it manually.

This makes it easy to discuss your reading with a friend, a partner, or anyone you trust, and allows them to view the same interpretation on their own device.

Exporting (enhanced version)

Enhanced users can also save the full contents of their readings. This allows you to keep your own copies outside the journal and use them on different devices or restore them later if you clear your browser’s local storage.

You can save a reading as a file that can be loaded back into Ramapaniching at any time. This works much like the journal, but the file is stored wherever you choose, giving you full control over your own archive.

Enhanced users can also export their readings as an HTML file or as a plain text file. These formats are useful for study, printing, personal notes, or keeping long term records of your consultations.

All saved and exported content stays on your side, giving you a secure and flexible way to preserve your readings in whatever form suits you best.
